i love these two. they're probably hands-down my favorite broadway role models and performers. love them love them love them.
ok, onto the good stuff. i'm gonna go on a tony awards rant now...i was so uber excited when the show began, then...slowly but surely...my enthusiasm started to wane...and i realized that this year in particular (not to say it hasn't been so in years past) the show is a complete sell-out. nearly every presenter was a big-name tv/film actor and i just feel like the american theatre wing/the powers that be were trying to appeal to a mainstream audience that doesn't even watch the show! i just feel like the integrity of the show is compromised when you're not honoring/celebrating what it's all about...the theatre community and the work that's been done in the theatre for the past year. whatever, i'm a snob. i'm just a little perturbed (i mean, c'mon. why have brooke shields present just because she was a replacement in wonderful town and chicago and grease? or have megan mullally represent young frankenstein when andrea martin or chris fitzgerald or my two aforementioned favorites could've performed?) oy, i'll stop now.
and i guess i gripe because i care and i love it so much. now onto more positive things...
how AWESOME for lin-manuel and in the heights...good for them (kick ass speech, by the way...) i have so much respect for him. what a well-deserved, heartwarming win!! need to see it immediately, along with south pacific, boeing-boeing (what a great cast...i love the camaraderie of the group. they feel like the kind of cast you want to be a part of. real, salt of the earth theatre folks!!), xanadu (which is totally this year's spamalot. and i ADORED spamalot) and the 39 steps.
and how much do i LOVE danny burstein. he is probably the best comedic musical theatre actor working today. the ultimate actor's actor in musical theatre. i adore him. and could cheyenne be any more hot and talented? no. he's terrif. (who am i? liza? who, by the way, looked scarily great. is she on the drugs?)
speaking of overblown divas...what's the deal with patti lupone. that's not a question, but more like an aggravated statement. she's such a caricature of herself now. does she ever enunciate in-between phrases? i swear "everything's coming up roses" sounded like so...
honey, everythi- comi- up roses an- daffodi-
everythi- comi- up sunshi- an- santa clau-
she just leaves her mouth open to make loud vowel sounds. it's like she's that big "wahwah" charlie brown character. i've had enough of patti.
by the way, can i just mention that today's been such a jam-packed, nonstop "broadway" day. i swear i've been listening to musicals ALL DAY. ewww, i'm so gross.
and how about sunday in the park. yes, it's british. very british. it felt a little technical and...sterile. and i'm not sure why one would re-vamp the production unless it was wonderfully innovative and different or better than the original. that's just my opinion though. it just feels a little boring to me (however, it's not to say that the entire creative team isn't talented and great. they are.)
was disappointed with rent's segment. thought the original cast should've actually PERFORMED. and eden looked odd, almost like she didn't fit in. the segment with little mermaid/faith prince/megan mullally wasn't very good either. it just felt kinda shabby. oh yea, and whoopi was god awful. sorry whoops. ps. have a new nickname for patrick stewart. p-stew. which sounds funny once you say it aloud. say it.
also, on a side note. i didn't appreciate a remark of tracy letts' upon accepting the award for august-osage county. he said something to the effect of "thank goodness some of us are doing a show in new york on broadway with actual theatre actors"....ok ok, yes it bugs me more than i can stand when any other tv/fake-celebrity gets to headline a broadway show just for the sake of their name value (ahem...katie holmes...ahem...mario lopez...i could go on...), but he inadvertently insulted everyone who is doing respected, honest work right now. not very well put, tracy letts. i get it, steppenwolf is awesome and you're the little show from chicago that could, but that wasn't very humble of you to say in a huge auditorium filled with your theatrical contemporaries...way to make everyone think you're an ungrateful asshole.
you know what i'm really missing these past few years? a good, old-fashioned show like thoroughly modern millie that's just fun and fulfilling! or like city of angels...a show that brings you back to an exciting, cool time period. maybe next season...
also...how about patti and laura and boyd? i guess it makes sense that all three would win, but it was really unexpected (while also being entirely predictable...strange huh?)
and how much do i love doing full-fledged book musicals? oh, the days of high school. i wish i could do grease (which was pretty awful on the telecast...let's just be honest) and the wiz and a chorus line again. hello again was the first musical i'd done since high school, but it wasn't a song and dance show, which i miss TERRIBLY (someone, please cast me in a show i can sing and dance in! please!)
i guess that's it for now. can't wait for the follow-up coverage tomorrow. and on a completely different note...stephanie for top chef???? poor richard.
and lastly...whenever certain songs come up on my ipod i ALWAYS listen to them...without shuffling or skipping through them (which i do 90% of the time because i have music a.d.d.)...i ALWAYS listen to "i turned the corner" from millie and anything norbert sings in last five years...and some songs from see what i wanna see...and that's probably it...weird right? oh well.
